Footballers are people, not widgets.

Very obviously I really, really, really want us to hang on to Todd. But like Emi he didn't start the last campaign in the best of frame of mind and maybe for the same reason, that we hung on to him waiting for a price that was never met. If he really wants to go, and with Emi at Villa I can see the attraction for him as those two work brilliantly together, and Villa are prepared to pay what is bound to be a high asking price, it will be really hard to say no. We're not selling a piece of furniture, which has no say in the matter; Todd has a massive say in it and neither we nor anyone at the club can control that.

People will huff and puff about "lack of ambition", self-funded models, slag Delia off, all the rest of it. Pretty unpleasant. Clubs with billionaire sugar-parents also have to sell players they don't really want to.

We've replaced brilliantly when stars have left in recent years; I'm in the "nervous about numbers at CB" camp already, so to have a Todd-sized hole to fill would make me as - well, concerned - as anyone. We've also got a good track record in the transfer market in recent seasons, the summer before our last Prem outing notwithstanding, and I can't think of anyone I'd rather run it than the people who already are.

I'll be absolutely gutted if Todd goes and I really want him not to. But if he does it's the way of the world, not the fault of individuals; and I will stay off Facebook for a couple of days as the supporter groups get pretty unbearable when stuff like that happens.

Whatever happens I'd still far rather be us than any number of clubs with richer but less engaged owners, who don't care or know much about football. Who wants to be an oligarch's plaything?
