It's an interesting balance to strike

a few decades ago we'd not have thought twice about slinging a young player into the starting 11 at the top level.

Times have changed certainly, but we do seem to now have a youth setup which is angled towards producing first teamers (ready for our team or a loan out). It's intriguing, because the U23 match results have been pretty patchy for a couple of years now.

Now that you can see some of those matches online, I've tried to catch them when I can. What was apparent was that they're handy for helping players try new stuff in a no risk environment and getting them used to playing in particular systems, but the standard at that level is not going to help a player kick on if they're playing it for any length of time.

So the funnel system of U23's for system/ethos and then a loan out or involvement in 1st team training for a sense of how to do this stuff 'for real' looks a good approach.

Perhaps Farke is seeing Sorenson more as a CB (Godfrey Style) or a DFM who slots into a back 4 (Tetteyesque)?

I agree we could use strengthening at CB (as WalksietheReturn rightly points out, we've struggled in that area almost with every promotion) - but I'd like to see Sorenson and AndyO get their chances too...

Fortunately I'm not paid to make those decisions.
