I don’t even follow your logic.

Whether they told us or not, the club’s management had made a clear promise not to stand in the way of young players if they wanted to move to a bigger club (unfortunately Villa are just that).

If they had not kept that promise, it would have destroyed trust between the entire squad and management, especially those other young players who might feel that one day, sooner or later, they might be in a similar situation.

Therefore, the club would have to assess a value which they thought was fair to the club, but also didn’t effectively become a refusal to sell.

The only way they could spark a “bidding war” was either to state the player was not for sale at any price or announce valuation at something entirely unrealistic like 100m, then reject some perfectly reasonable bids and hope that the intended war ensued.

If the bidding war didn’t happen, either the deal falls through and the player feels betrayed and the rest of the squad loses trust, or the club would have to climb down and accept a fraction of their public valuation which would result in Webber not being taken seriously in future negotiations, not to mention you being very unhappy that we accepted the bid despite valuing him at 100m.

If we said he was not for sale at any price, and then sold him, well. We’ve been here before I think (Chris Sutton).

I only raised the point that they had told us to move this discussion from the realms of supposition to fact-based.
