Plumbing question...

...kitchen tap is a mixer with separate taps on the sides. To get hot water, I had to turn the hot tap several times. As of yday it only turns a single half turn and no water coming out.

I am assuming the tap is knackered but main question is whether I can replace this two tap mixer with a single lever mixer? Or do I have to out two taps back? Are the insides the same or fundamentally different?

Missus wants single lever...
