Grace period from the Champ to Lg 1

is the length of the players' contracts.

So you can see teams on the brink of relegation from the Champ extending contracts on players they are likely to keep on relegation (as long as the player agrees obvs).

Ipswich have already extended some contracts just before the Lg 1 cap came in.
