Defensive records aren't just about the abilities of your defenders. I think the main reasons we shipped so many goals was our consistent ability to give the ball away in dangerous positions while playing out from the back and the fact that we lacked a single quality defensive midfielder (I like Tettey but if he's the best defensive midfielder you have then at Prem level you are totally f*cked). I doubt the best defenders in the world would have stopped us shipping goals last season, because the midfield simply wasn't up to it.
