Who knows their laptops?

I think i'm going to buy a notebook and i'm looking for a few pointers from nerdy IT types.

Just a couple of questions.....

Are there any makes to avoid?

Would it be worth spending that bit more for a VAIO?

I want a Pentium powered one, but would it be worth shelling out a bit more for a dual core (what's the difference?)

how much of a difference can shared graphics (as opposed to dedicated) make?

Hope someone who knows their stuff can help.
