I think we are doing "ok" - could have been better and could have been worse
The PPE thing is a classic example of what could have been done a lot better. Pretty much inexcusable. I worry also that some of the economic measures from the chancellor are going to take too long to kick in which may render the lockdown less effective. I would also like to see testing/quarantine of everyone arriving in the UK but maybe that's something for the next phase when they are trying to stop a second wave.
The next week will tell us. At present, of the major European nations, the numbers suggest that only Germany have dealt with it markedly better than us (presumably due to their better intensive care and testing capacity) but even they are starting to catch us up a little bit. At the moment it looks like we will see fatalities a little bit below France but probably not at the levels of Italy and Spain. Can all change quite quickly though.
