Petrol has caught up considerably in the MPG stakes

I would go for a petrol car next time round, but I won't be chopping in my diesel just yet (mines Euro 6 compliant).

It does depend a little though on what the car is for. Diesel is good for:

1) V high mileage (prob over 15k) and long journeys (diesel engines are slower to warm up on short journeys)
2) Towing - you'd need a big petrol engine to produce the torque required for pulling a load, therefore probably worse than equivalent petrol
3) A v big heavy car - same as towing. If you're looking at a Discovery or something, a petrol engine isn't going to cope very well (if they even do a petrol version?)

Overall, plenty of diesels out there are economical and decent on emissions, but seems that in the long term, the trend is going toward petrol / hybrid, so the long-term choice is probably one of those, unless you specifically need one of the benefits listed above that diesel gives you.
