He’s therefore got to be worth a chunk more than the murphys.

I’d say between £15m and £20m.

However, this was discussed a couple of weeks ago with £30m being thrown around. Like you I found that figure hard to believe in the context of Maddison going for £25m or whatever it was. I was in a minority of 1, although I do concede that the market has moved again since then and PL experience (and success) counts for something.

If Cantwell really influences games in the second half of the season, I could imagine someone paying over £20m. Not sure who it would be, doesn’t feel like a top 6 player, and it would be a very bold signing for a team like West Ham etc, but you only have to look at the amounts Bournemouth spent on Solanke etc and suddenly it’s not so hard to imagine.

Being English adds a fair bit of value too given the constraints on squads. Maybe that’s a reason one of the top 6 would go for him.

The miserable thing is though, I’d be pretty nervous if Norwich were spunking £20m on Cantwell if we were the buyer rather than the seller. Hard to see how we can ever compete in the market for young English talent even if we were an established PL side. Which suggests to me that football is ruined.
