Interesting.

I've heard a couple of teams doing that. It'd be interesting to see if that helps develop those skills in others (or stunts it...).

They definitely need to work on captaining at county level. The paucity of talent has made it hard at the top level (where root should be our best batsman, not grafted into the captaincy despite lack of experience or aptitude, simply as he's a guaranteed pick... Until he's not...)
