you are getting near the end of a contract (because you face the threat that they'll leave for nowt if you don't sell so your bargaining power goes through the floor). He'd only signed the previous contract 8 months earlier so it surely wasn't anywhere near expiring. There would be no difference to a sale price between a player with say 2.5 years left on his contract and one with 6 years left. In both cases the selling club is under no pressure to sell so it isn't a factor.
