It's wages, not purchases that cause the problems.

It isn't just the new players you buy that cause an issue. It is the Prem level wages of pretty much all the players you already have that you can't afford once the parachute payments go (you think only the new players we bought were on Prem level wages???). Yes, players have relegation clauses but they're usually only about 25% or so - your income goes down by a lot more than that once you get relegated.
That's why we are keeping money back now - so we can afford to pay the now-inflated-by-promotion wages of the playing squad we have if we go down.
