I remember seeing the report on that when it happened.

Quite shocking, really.

I know statistically we live in the safest time ever, but it doesn’t *feel* that way.

Just to recount a relatively recent occurrence: I was riding home from work and was almost home. I was passing the entrance / exit to the Georgian Townhouse, which is about 100m past a roundabout on a left curve in the road. It’s quite a busy road and it would have been about 6pm. I would have been doing about 20mph. As I approached the car park exit I could see the front of a car looking to join the road from the pub and it started to move - I realised if it did join the road I would probably not be able to avoid it so moved into the middle of the carriageway for the driver to better see me, and maybe to try to avoid him if he did. I raised my left hand, palm towards him, and mouthed (didn’t shout) “wait” as I went past.

His reaction? In the less than a couple of seconds it took for me to pass him, he saw me, his expression changed to absolute fury, and I could see him (his window was closed) shout “CUNT!”. The road isn’t wide enough to pass comfortably, and there was oncoming traffic, so he drove close behind me, revving, and when I reached my street and turned left he accelerated very hard to pass me and blasted the horn as he went by, pretty close.

When a car horn is right next to you in traffic it’s disturbingly loud. It also would have looked to any passers-by as if he was retaliating to something I’d done ‘wrong’ (which was to take evasive action). More to the point, he would NEVER have done that to another motorist; he would have seen a car and waited. As it was, he saw a cyclist and was angry that he had to wait. Because I interacted with him, he took it personally. He wasn’t aware that if I hadn’t, I’d have quite possibly hit his new black M series. Now I know that road rage incidents happen frequently between drivers, but even so...

Yeah, too many words.
