As an example. In the 2015 general election, UKIP took 12% of the vote yet only gained 1 seat in parliament. Hardly proportional representation.

Out of 650 MP's around 450 of them voted remain in the 2016 referendum. That is 75%.

Yet when the electorate voted it was 52/48 in favour of leaving

If the Scottish parliament decided to vote on leaving the act of union in 2014. At the time the SNP had the 53% of the seats in the Scottish parliament and could of left.

However they had a referendum and 55% of the population voted no.

Monumental decisions like declaring independence should be bought to the people. Especially when most major political parties are lobbied by big business.
