Does anyone use an external CD/DVD burner at all?

I've grown sick of making shiny coasters with this seriously knackered drive I have in my lappy, so I'm looking at buying an external burner. However, as is usual these days, I can only get reviews on obsolete models - though I can, of course, compare the prices of a load of machines I know nothing about, in a hundred different places.

Good makes? Bad makes? Do they all come with integral software, or may I install my preferred proggy on all/some makes?

Any help would be much appreciated - ta in advance.

I'll keep looking, tho my head is past spinning.
