MPs are elected. They have the legitimacy to represent their voters, as best they judge, that comes from that. (And if they’re choosing a PM rather than just a party leader, then they’ve been elected as part of a majority.)
Party members haven’t been elected by anyone. Why on earth should them paying to join a party give them the right to choose the prime minister?
