they weren't bombarding people trying to sleep, they were having a conversation with group members who happened to be awake

group members who do not wish to participate at that time have the option to (a) not be logged in (b) be asleep. Sleeping group members who do not wish to be woken up to hear such exciting news have the option to (a) mute the phone (b) turn the phone off (c) keep the phone in another room

Congratulate the new mum, and use it as an excuse for the other dads (and footy mums) to go for a congratulatory beer with the dad tonight whilst the football is on.

And if he can't make it, whatsapp him the scores and group banter so he can be there in spirit, maybe take a photo of the pint you've bought him and will drink on his behalf? The mums (and non-footy dads) will 'love' all of that, and maybe take the hint that a parent school group is not for inane chit chat...?
