there's a sheriff as well, my missus was made a freeman of the city of norwich last year and they were all lovely. lovely old norwich city. the sheriff is allowed to carry his mace erect even in front of the monarch which is unusual. think gunny was sheriff one year, i bet he'd have loved to have an erect mace in front of the queen.
