Yeah, I hoped it wasn't him too

The club seemed pretty straight with him when we loaned/shipped him out, but I could see how a long timer might be a bit narked at being shuffled off so quickly by a manager with very little track record.

Russell Martin for me falls in the same category as Daryl Sutch - tremendous servant of the club who got unwarranted flak but always put the club first. I always thought it was telling that managers repeatedly made him captain. Clearly held a lot of sway among the players.
