Having won the league easily, they fielded a weakened team against Coventry, who had some matches left to play due to postponements. The last one (I think) was against Everton and was after the cup final, unusually. Coventry won easily and sent us down. I think Coventry won their last three or four, having been s**te for months. In those days, Coventry were the cockroaches, rather like Sunderland until a couple of years ago, and most seasons were involved in relegation battles they always won. When they finally went down, they carried on going and haven't been back since.
