I've never bought this argument (even though I'm a Remainer)

Those who could have voted but didn't bother chose not to use their voice. The referendum was 52-48 for Leave. Not 30% for leave against the other 70% - that's counting all the abstains as Remain, which isn't right.

Ironically, Farage had said that if it was something like 52-48 for Remain, he'd want another referendum, but that's another story.

It's also true that had the referendum been binding, the result would have been declared void, because of all the dodgy s**t that Leave did (which is not to say Remain were angels: they weren't. Both sides lied, for example).
