It's about money and demand. The Premier League generates it, the Cup doesn't. The only reason the Cup was huge in, say, the 70`s is that there was literally no live televised league football. The FA Cup final was the only live televised domestic game all season. Once league football started being televised in the 80s the writing was on the wall.
