But they have dug their heels in and risk alienating everyone in the process. It may take time to get that trust back.

That is not in itself an argument for sacking him right now just because we say so. But consider this. If they are already contemplating the removal of the manager and have an exit plan in place, I wouldn't epxect them to say that but I would expect them not to smear us all while they wait to out it into effect.
