I think in the late 80s some parents made a killing out of having kids at university.

Certainly did in Birmingham, from what I could see.

Thatcherism in full effect:
- self employed so declare low income hence full grant for child (or get accountant to hide salary, I know some that did)
- buy cheap student house in area close to university
- free accommodation for child, plus income from sharers paying rent and therefore covering mortgage
- over time, area around university gets gentrified
- housing market recovers
- sell house for large profit or remain landlord and keep it as income source

Now, I'm not making a judgment but I could understand why some might find that unfair.
