V5C / Cartax help

Knowledge of the Wrath...

If my V5C has gone walkies during my various moves over the past few months, and I haven't got a reminder letter from the DVLA, can I go to the post office, get a new V5C and Tax at the same time? I've been on a bit of a nomadic existence the past year and not been the best at keeping DVLA informed - which i know isn't great. Depression etc makes you lose track of the details. None of which will matter to the constabulary if I don't have any tax...

LMGTFYYLF shows that post offices "Maybe" let you do this, but wondering if anyone had any experience of doing it. Ta in advance.
