I think it is a couple of things

1) He needs to be playing for us as part of his development now
2) Farke thinks he is ready to play in the Championship
3) Farke is also impressed by Thompson as well, more than he expected, and wants both getting involved, but if he keeps them only in their primary positions but you've got Tettey and Trybull ahead of Godfrey and Thompson, and he clearly wants to play less of the two defensive midfielders stuff in order to create more chances. Therefore, if one of the lads can also work in another position it gives us more chance of developing both rather than only one of them - Godfrey has played RB before so it makes sense to try him out there and gives us a ball playing option in central defence in a more fluid formation where he could join the midfield when an opponent parks the bus for example.
4) We need another CB if we are going to play 3 at the back. Right now we only have 4 for 3 slots (including Raggett). So if Godfrey can play there then it just makes sense all round, giving him more opportunity and saving us some money.
5) It has been suggested that he isn't totally convinced by Raggett. Not sure how much of that is true. I hope it isn't the case, and is rather that Raggett is clearly behind the starting 3, but not sufficient as the only backup for all of them.
