Exactly. A couple of years ago we went to Plitvice in Croatia.

Lot's of war damage and deserted houses still there. On further investigation of the history of the area, I discovered the dreadful atrocities that had been visited on the resident Serbs by Croats back before WW2. Hardly surprising that the Serbs in that part of Croatia were very scared when Yugoslavia broke up and Croatia gained independence. In fact, as a Nazi vassal state, Croatia was not a pleasant country.
Totally different now, wonderful country, wonderful people but still some nasty elements there
