an addiction can be an illness
or a mental health issue, or whatever you want to call it
People don't choose to have an addiction. The clue is in the word.
What you're really suggesting is probably that we should have less sympathy for people who put themselves into a situation where they develop an addiction, but that's a separate issue and runs into some much deeper and wider social questions.
