What do you mean by thinks you like? Do you mean that is suggests that you might like

then? And then you don’t click “like” or immediately go to google the product?

So now it has a fair idea that you have no interest in that list of things. Or certainly not enough interest for you to bother “liking” or searching for them.

Powerful demographics. Man of your age living in your area, your nationality with estimated average income based on those factors and any education or relationship or employers you’ve also listed. Yet you don’t like classical music and you don’t like hip hop. Country and western is a long shot but no you don’t like that either. We’re already putting you in the bracket of reasonably educated and relatively conservative male. Perhaps you like some form of rock or punk music though. Everybody needs some rebellion in some musical form surely? Ah, yes. And you don’t like nightclubs because all they play is that bang bang s**t. Not playing computer games. Possibly social. Possibly in a relationship.

That’s all oversimplified and just examples. Don’t jump on any specifics of what I’ve suggested but essentially using the right algorithms based on the right statistical research, companies can produce fairly accurate prediction models of which areas are likely to vote for certain parties or candidates, and therefore optimise their campaign spending by choosing the right targets to swing an election. They can also target subtle or subliminal messages in what appear to be innocent Facebook memes etc. Some companies have managed to even cross reference your Facebook profile with your electoral record and voting history.

By the way. This is not facebook’s doing. It’s not them actually doing it. They are the enablers
