Ok some kid of crude mechanism using tape and soil is still cheating and not great but its improvising and probably not that effective.

Applying sandpaper to the ball which you have taken out with you onto the pitch is a different level of premeditated cheating. If they were doing this during the Ashes then actually is it any wonder they were able to get the sort of swing they were able to. I know we took a hiding but there were pivotal moments/sessions in most of those test matches and who knows if it had an effect.
