Sophisticated scenarios?

Anyone know if they only produce point estimates (for the likely chance of converting) or whether they also simulate tonnes of random scenarios to produce probability distributions too?

What's the actual purpose of the xG stat though? Is it meant to be a predictor or simply an observational measurement by which to compare a team's expected goals scored vs. actual converted???
