I think the point is that, as OG points out, the US is a democracy

The people there have it in their power to stop this continuous flow of school massacres (not to mention other mass shootings) but choose not to exercise that power. They would rather sacrifice their own children than do what at least every other first and second world country does, i.e. restrict access to firearms, which also restricts this kind of thing.

At some level we have to allow the US to make their decision and live with its consequences. We wouldn't want them setting norms and rules over here and neither should we expect to do that over there.

Meanwhile the citizens of Syria have no control over what's happened. Those kids Tombs is talking about do not have parents who could have, but chose not to, intervene politically to remove the violence from their own society.

Amidst all the I'm-not-racist-butting about Syria it is one of the defining tragedies of our time, and I think history will judge the lack of attention, much less meaningful humanitarian action, we provide to Syria very harshly.
