Currently have a 6 wk old occupying my attention

Will depend on terms of what you've signed and the underlying lease/tenancy agreement, eg are they out of any fixed term yet?

Also usual non-legal advice applies, eg if its a long standing mate and wriggling out of the guarantee will see them turfed out, you've got to weigh up the "dont be a c**t" factor against risk of them defaulting.
