Watching footy (and American footy) kept me sane during the period that

my then fiancée was going through discovery, diagnosis, surgery and treatment.

Watching a sports match is the absolute best thing for me to relax. Work was the only other thing which could distract me as much and even then keeping my mind off it for 8 hours a day, five days a week was not really possible. Couldn't focus on reading books, watching anything with a plot at all.

Sports is not at all important, as Dandy says, but on the other hand it is so utterly immersive that the world stands still from kick off until final whistle. When you're in that situation you have to be switched on all the time to care for your partner both physically and spiritually, so I found it really therapeutic to just switch off my brain and watch footy for 90 minutes now and again.
