Pretty sure that's exactly what we're trying to do

The key is get the team buying to make a decent offer in wages terms, because that's what determines our saving. They might say "Well, we're only going to offer him £10k per week because you're on the hook for the rest anyway". And they don't have any obligation to tell us what they'll be paying him - the settlement is between us and Naismith. He is free to ask us to pay up £30k per week of his contract (even if they're paying him £20kpw so he is only £20k pw down) or he'll stay here and force us to pay the lot. What do we do then? Accept his offer, even though it only saves us £10k pw, or risk being stuck with him and paying the lot. If he thinks we're desperate to shift him he'll just play hardball.
