It was the first serious novel I ever read, I think.

I did my GCSE Open Study on it when I was 15!

If you like it, you should read 'Darkness at Noon' by Arthur Koestler - Koestler was a friend of Orwell's, and Orwell repaid that friendship by ripping off his novel in '1984'.

He may also have shopped Koestler to MI5, I'm not sure (he did that to quite a few of his mates) ...
