Autumn of 2006, to counteract the opening of Chapelfield a few

of the local traders around Pottergate, Lower Goat Lane, Dove Street, Bedford Street, St Benedict's, St Gregory's and Swan Lane all got together to help remind people of the great variety of independent shops. We started holding meetings in the Wine Press and I was the inaugural "chairman" as such. We all came up with names for the area and had a good old vote on it. The Norwich Lanes name was a blatant plagiarism of the Brighton Lanes of course, there was no shying away from that, but we had the vote and it won easily.
The whole branding thing of the area is not to everyone's taste, it's died down a bit now as far as a brand is concerned, but more people from outside of Norwich are aware of this area hopefully thanks to it's creation back in 2006. Of course these streets and shops have existed for centuries way before the "Laaaaanes " was invented ,it feels like I've been here for at least 1.
Hope it's done some good.
