an alternative view of Halloween

is that it teaches kids (and I'm thinking about my own brood of under 5s) that if you want something nice (sweets) you have to do something that requires effort (dressing up, traipsing around in the cold/rain, developing the self-confidence to speak to big scary adults) and to earn it

instead of just whinging all the f**king time with "but I want a sweetie! waaaaaaaah"

Plus it keeps them occupied in preparations for a few days/nights. I think you've just forgotten how VITAL that is for coping with young 'uns.

Spot on about the rest. And I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to the annual red poppy vs white poppy debate.
