Illness!?
As someone who has done more than their fair share of gambling (successfully and unsuccessfully) I'd never consider gambling to be an illness.
Some people find it harder to manage than others but it certainly isn't an illness. It's weakness and selfishness if you don't have it to lose and it is affecting others you care about.
Fronting up and dealing with it is the only way so fair play to him.
