Being retained for 15 years gave me a decent perspective of the FBU.

Suffice to say I was not overly impressed with them. They would take your subs ok but when a couple of lads on station needed help they were not a lot of help. Also working with the yanks for 15 on base they could never understand why we didn't cover medicals as they did in the states and we did on base. Must firefighters are trained up to basic EMT level (7 week course so decent) as most of us were. Probably find in Norfolk the wholetime stations are less keen to respond than the retained stations as you are 'paid per call' though might be doing the wholetime lads a disservice.
