Wrath guitarristas

I want to start playing again (not live for an audience, just me in a room) and have dusted off the Tele. I've got an old (1984) Session amp and it still sounds great despite not having been used regularly in 20+ years. There's a lot of buzz and hiss though, which disappears when my hands are on the strings. I presume therefore that I might be earthing it (you can tell from this I know nothing about electrics etc so feel free to pitch any replies at beginner level). Should I have a fiddle with the plug - it's f**king ancient - or is the problem perhaps with the guitar? And now it's cutting out a bit, which I think might mean there's some dodgy contacts somewhere. Any suggestions?
