In 4 years here in Japan there have been 36 M6+ earthquakes. Numerous typhoons.

Also over a hundred quakes of above M5.

If anyone experience the Great Norfolk Quake of 2008 that was M5 apparently.

As Magnitude scale is exponential that means M6 is 10 times bigger in terms of energy, M7 100 times bigger and so on.

Here in Japan they use the "shindo" (shaking) scale which lists the intensity of the shakes in each municipality. Much more relevant comparison as Magnitude Scale just describes energy released. Goes from 1-7. Anything above a 4 is a bit unnerving.

A lot depends on the kind of land you are on, distance from epicenter and depth of quake etc.
