'better contract' only in hindsight

if he hadn't have been sacked, he took a pay cut so it would have been a worse contract for him.

Things not working out the way we wanted does not in itself make the original decisions incompetent or even wrong. eg Joe Root's declaration was great. Except with hindsight.
