is it possible that this kind of possession style
is only really effective when you have very, very good players in most positions. Players who are all comfortable on the ball, comfortable interchanging positions and comfortable defending 1v1? Like Barcelona or Bayern.
Or, if you don't have excellent players, then perhaps it is only really effective as a defensive tactic, like how Swansea used to use it. Just keep the ball to stop the opposition having it, but without taking many risks at all and without ever losing your team shape.
We seem to be trying to go the Barcelona/Bayern approach, which might just not be the right philosophy with the players we have.
