This is exactly it...

We spent the money we had on signing and wages to try to secure our position in the Prem / bounce back.

Whether that money was well spent is a different matter, but we now have to cut our cloth to account for lower income.

Had we not spent money everyone would have moaned about lack of ambition, so the club can't win.

However, there is no doubt that the money could have been spent better. That comes down to better signings and more sensible contracts. Hopefully the club is moving in the right direction in that respect.
