You take out a mortgage on a house, and then you lose your job.

Your next job pays less and, to help pay the mortgage, you start shopping at Lidl instead of Waitrose.

Of course you 'could' have squirrelled away loads of cash when you had the good job, but you chose to spend it on holidays and restaurants and trips on City Boats (cos that is what everyone else does)

Also, and these are only small details: the dorrans & howsons wanted to live closer to their relatives.
