Formby, Ainsdale area is nice on Merseyside,
Further north as you go through Lancashire it gets a bit grim quickly. You need to go a lot further north towards the Lake District before it gets better. Whitehaven was quite nice when I last went (8yrs or so ago). Could be worth a look may be?
