the road has traffic sensors cut into it, these are electromagnetic detection coils or
loops. Sometimes known as 'scoot loops'. You will see them, rectangles, usually 3, approaching a set of lights. Idea being as traffic passes over a busy junction it gives more green light time over a junction which might only have 1 car waiting. Thats the theory.
However, cycles don't always trigger the loops for 2 reasons.
1. loops are not cut right to the edge of the road, so depending on where you are on the road you might not pass over it.
2. Some set of lights come off this management set off peak hours to a basic standard set of light timings eg 7 seconds green for each light regardless of a backlog of traffic.
There is one solution to this. Get a 'greenwave', which is basically a gadget emergency services have which when deployed will turn all lights in the path green.
Benny Hill made redwave blockers in The Italian Job, you just need to reverse engineer that, or get one off the dark web. Or strap a metal bin to the right front fork of your bike like a sidecar style, to be certain those loops will trigger.
Good luck pal.
