I'd argue its as often the other way around

Our financial woes in the 90's and the 00's came when we dropped out of the top division and then could not get back out of it.

Conversely our recent financial stability was all due to being in the premier league and thus receiving the tv monies and now it at risk because we got relegated and might not get back. If we don't get back up then sooner or later we will have financial issues unless we are all just going to accept lower championship or even league 1 status.
